ODIN RAPHAEL
56 YEARS - MALE - 5 FEET 10 IN - PANSEXUAL - WIZARD/PHILOSOPHER
ONCE UPON A TIME
"a fool's paradise is a wise man's hell."
LIKES & DISLIKES
✓ helping people - he may not always succeed, and more often than not he actually makes the situation worse by offering his assistance, but he means well.
✓ rhymes and riddles - he often speaks in an eccentric language, composed of silly riddles and rhyming words. many cannot grasp what he's trying to convey, assuming he's a dimwit, but his artful play on words is actually quite clever.
✓ playing the fiddle - hand him any instrument with strings and he will leave you speechless. he often gives performances in the square as a treat to the villagers.
✓ talking to himself - while many find this quirky habit to be strange, it is how odin reaches some of his most astounding and enlightening epiphanies.
✓ theatre and being on stage - he has a strong passion for acting and the theatre. while he may be a fail wizard, he is a highly convincing drama-performer.
✓ shameless flirting - should he come across a pretty woman or handsome man, there's no doubt that he will try to woo them with his charm and magic. of course, just because he likes flirting doesn't mean he's any good at it.
✓ poetry and literature - he could spend hours reading under the peaceful, sanguine sky, nose stuck in a book of wonder and fiction, and while he's not very good at conjuring spells, he can sew beautiful lines of poetry together out of thin air.
✓ touches and affection - he cannot keep his hands to himself, having no concern for boundaries or personal space. with or without your consent, he will braid your hair, massage your shoulders, and give you unwanted hugs.
✗ when his spells backfire - there is nothing he finds more frustrating than his own failure. he comes from a line of pure-blooded wizards, and yet he is an utter failure.
✗ being underestimated - naturally, because of his rather poor talents in magic, people tend to snicker at him, waiting for another spell to go comically haywire. he detests their anticipation and will go to great lengths to prove himself.
✗ the mundane and ordinary - ordinary people and mundane things simply cannot keep his interest. his mind is too vast to be content with the simplicity of normality.
✗ being cut off in mid-sentence - there is nothing he despises more than someone cutting him off while he is in the middle of one of his enlightening tales.
✗ ignorant fools - those who refuse to learn are the most troublesome. odin has much to offer, and when people fail to heed his advice, he often becomes agitated.
✗ people who take things too seriously - of course, there are times when keeping a straight face is necessary, but life is no fun if you're too scared to actually live.
✗ lonesome nights - ever since his wife was taken from him due to an incurable illness, his bed has felt incredibly empty and cold. he yearns for the warmth of another body next to his own to fill the void in the sheets.. and in his heart.
✗ being called 'stupid' - sure, he can be a little silly sometimes, smiling too much and laughing when he shouldn't, but he's far from being a dimwit. he possesses deep wisdom of the order of life, and false assumptions ruffle his feathers.
PERSONALITY
odin is quite the eccentric man. he's a magician, and while all magicians are a little odd, he takes the cake. you see, he believes he is a magic extraordinaire, but he is actually the lousiest wizard in all the land. it's quite rare any of his spells actually work, and more often than not, they end up backfiring on him. during his last mishap, he accidentally transformed himself into a women, and in the one before that, he turned an innocent traveler into a frog. he means well, always having good intentions, but for whatever reason, his spells consistently go awry.
despite what many people assume about him because of his magical mayhem, believe it or not, odin is actually an incredibly intelligent man, wise beyond his years. he understands the order of life and god's creations like no other. he can look into a person's eyes and judge the purity of their soul in a heartbeat. there are many times that he wishes to pass this invaluable knowledge on to those younger and less experienced than him; unfortunately, his wisdom is often greeted with petty ignorance, and unable to grasp what he is saying, people dismiss him as a loon.
even if he is rather odd, there's no denying the charm of his warm smile. unfortunately, he ruins this charm by opening his mouth. while he is handsome in appearance and seems to realise this, he doesn't know the first thing about wooing the ladies. although, let's be honest, his effort is rather endearing.
he lives in an internal world of enlightenment, and his mind is a philosophical place full of wonder. while many cannot comprehend the complexity of his speech and thought, it makes perfect sense to him. he is constantly questioning the world, eyes and mind wide open. he spends much of his time on the road, traveling from place to place, and when he isn't on foot, exploring the curiosities of the world, he is in the library with his nose shoved in a book. he has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.
if not in the library, he will be reciting elaborately scripted lines in the theatre, acting out dramas with his fellow performers. he has a passion for bringing literature to life, both a playwright and an actor in his own scripts, able to portray any character to a t. he performs every weekend, whether he is taking the role of a character or reciting artful words as the narrator. he wouldn't miss rehearsal for his life.
THE STORY SO FAR
odin was the son of two pure-blood wizards, and as such, he was expected to become a great wizard himself. unfortunately, while his mind was broad and well-sculpted, he lacked the magical talent that his ancestors possessed. there was always pressure weighing him down, and eventually, unable to cope, odin walked out. acting in spite, mostly to displease his parents, he took the part of a jester in a local theatre. he was the clown of the comedy, using his spells to coerce laughter from his audience. it seemed to be the only thing he was good at.
however, one with such a vast mind can only play the role of a fool for so long, and eventually, odin became frustrated and tired of pretending to be an idiot. he enjoyed standing on the stage, in the spotlight, but he didn't want to hear laughter. he wanted to hear applause. displeased, he stopped attending rehearsals and started spending more of his time in the library, flipping through old books. one story every day. he quickly became obsessed with the words he read on the pages, and suddenly his typical life seemed entirely mundane. during his sessions in the library, he happened to meet an old scholar. the wise man told odin that life was meant to be lived, not read about in books.
it was this man who became his role-model and inspired him to set off on his travels. he left his books behind and went on adventures of his own. for many years, he was a nomad, wandering the land in search of something he couldn't name. sometimes he stopped in villages, but he never stayed in one place for long. he learned great things on his journeys, and it is only in more recent years that he has finally settled down in a friendly village. he has also returned to the theatre, although he is no longer a petty actor in a poorly-put-together comedy. rather, he is a playwright of his own, and quite a well-known one at that.
when he isn't performing, he is either in the library (he swears he has already read all the books on the shelves) or in his study, writing about his adventures. unfortunately, his magical talents have not improved much, and while he has improved his life in many ways, he is still, without a doubt, the misfit of the town.
OTHER INFO
he has been on this earth for just over fifty years, but he retains the image of a youthful man, appearing to be in his mid-twenties. being a pure-blood wizard, his lifespan is longer than most.
somewhere in the many years of travel, he married a human woman. sadly, shortly after they had wed, she passed away from an unknown illness. odin has not forgiven himself. as he claims, 'a true wizard could have saved her.'
