TRISTAN DE VALENCE
23 YEARS - MALE - 6 FEET 2 IN - HETEROSEXUAL - LOST PRINCE
ONCE UPON A TIME
"in order to understand the world, one has to turn away from it."
LIKES & DISLIKES
✓ sarcasm and witty exchanges - if you get into a spat with him, you better be able to speak his native tongue. he respects anyone who can match his wit.
✓ the quiet of the forest at dawn - the quiet and peace of the woods has always been calming to him, just before the sun rises and the birds start to sing.
✓ fighting for what he believes in - he has a strong sense of justice, and when he draws his sword, it will always be for the right reasons.
✓ keeping people at a distance - both physically and emotionally. he is a lone wolf, and he has no intention in forming attachments or bonds with those he happens to cross paths with. he keeps a ten foot wall around his heart.
✓ dominance and being in charge - he isn't exactly power-hungry, but he does have a strong desire to retain his control. he'd rather give the orders than take them.
✓ the sound of the violin and harp - while the cheery tunes played by grinning fiddlers make him want to smash their instruments, the melancholic hum of the violin is his weakness, and the gentle pluck of the harp's strings mesmerizes him.
✓ winning and victory - there is nothing more pleasing than the feeling of well-earned triumph. he cannot stand losing, whether it be to a verbal duel or a physical brawl, and he will go to great lengths to win. he does, however, play fair.
✓ people who know what they want - he has no time for fickle women or cowardly men. he admires those with a prowess and purpose to their life.
✗ broken promises - he is a man of his word, and while he is morally conflicted in many areas, oaths are sacred to him. to break a promise is a horrible sin.
✗ unnecessary physical contact - his childhood was absent of loving touches, and he tends to flinch should someone reach out too fast. the only physical contact he knows is the wrath of an angry fist. he'd prefer it if you kept your hands to yourself.
✗ having his dominance challenged - let's just say he has a bit of a control complex. the only person he takes orders from is the man be believes to be his father, and sometimes he even struggles abiding by that.
✗ when people sugarcoat the truth - being a straightforward individual, he would rather hear brutal honesty than honey-dipped half-truths.
✗ people who talk too much - he finds people who can't keep their mouth shut for more than ten seconds to be nuisances, no more than irritating distractions.
✗ emotional openness - confiding in others has always been a struggle for him. he was taught from a young age that emotions are merely a weakness to be overcome.
✗ being mocked or embarrassed in public - this is a quick way to earn a black-eye or a broken nose. while he merely rolls his eyes at teasing, mockery is a different story. laugh at him and you may not live to gossip about it.
✗ admitting he can't do something - he was taught one thing, and that was to succeed. he cannot bear the thought of failure, if only because of the heavy expectations that have been piled on his sturdy shoulders.
PERSONALITY
brought up in a desolate landscape by a cold-hearted, selfish man, tristan's views on life are, naturally, quite cynical. he was never shown true kindness, and in consequence, he does not understand the meaning of love, warmth, and compassion. instead, he was raised to be a warrior and a ruthless soldier. aragon did not want him to learn the feeling of remorse, as he feared that the single, crippling emotion could one day turn his 'son' against him.
like the man who raised him, tristan has become rather insensitive to the needs of others. he is seen as apathetic and cavalier, unflinching in the face of peril. many would describe him as heartless; however, this isn't entirely true. while he wears a mask of steel, jaw clenched firmly, there are cracks in his rough exterior. he possesses softer emotions, but he has learned to suppress these meeker feelings, hiding them from the watchful eyes of others. he was taught that emotions are nothing but a hindrance, a weakness, and by revealing even the smallest spec of softness, he is providing his enemy with a chance to strike while his armour is off.
tristan is a man of few words. he is quiet, somber, and does most of his negotiating in his mind. when he does decide to grace someone with his voice, his words are gruff and snide, often stitched together with dry sarcasm. obviously, with a tongue as sharp as his, he doesn't make the best partner for conversation. if one should stick around, however, they may catch on to the wit sewn artfully between his words. he appreciates those with intellect.
the prince is undyingly loyal. without even the slightest hesitation, he will give his life for those he pledges his allegiance to, which is the main reason behind his unfaltering obedience toward aragon. tristan is highly intelligent, and there are times he does question the villainous man's orders, but he does not dare disobey him. not out of fear of the consequences, but in lieu of his loyalty and admiration toward the only father he has ever known.
while tristan is every bit as deceptive and conniving as the man who he serves, when he gives his word, he means it. no matter the circumstances, he will never break a promise; he carries his oaths to his grave. he may live in a world under corrupt rule, but he still has his values. he is a good person, and although his heart may be cold and neglected, he has retained a sense of integrity.
THE STORY SO FAR
he was raised by the dark lord, aragon, in the barren outlands, believing the tyrannical man to be his rightful father; or, at least, the closest thing he has. from a young age, tristan was told that the former king of astale had ordered his 'real parents' to be executed for a petty crime, and that aragon is his one true savior. while tristan is quite a clever young man, he was raised in isolation and has been given no reason to question the untrue stories.
in actuality, aragaon is his uncle, a well-hidden truth. when tristan was barely two months old, he was stolen from the royal family, his family, too young to recall the tragic events. the day aragon was banished from astale, he took the king's newborn son with him out of bitterness and spite, a final act of revenge. tristan has been raised to despise the kingdom in which he was born, as well as its sole ruler, who unbeknownst to him, is actually his younger sister.
he had a rough start to life, as anyone would growing up in such a dismal landscape. the outlands were no place for an innocent child, and his heart was quickly hardened. he received no affection from aragon, brought up as a soldier rather than a son. he was trained from a young age to wield a sword and fend for himself, childhood lacking the warmth he should have received from his birth parents, who aragon later had assassinated. kindness is not an emotion he is familiar with, and he has grown into a cold, steel-faced man, brainwashed by his deceitful uncle.
tristan sees aragon as his savior, the courageous man who rescued him from the abandonment of his real parents, whose identity he is still unaware of. he knows aragon was the king's brother by blood, but the story he has been told oh-so-many times is much different from the truth. you see, tristan believes aragon to be the hero, and his deceased father the villain. he has been poisoned with lie after lie about how the exiled criminal was ruthlessly chased out by his ambitious, power-hungry brother, when the story is actually quite the opposite.
he now plots with aragon. together, they scheme on how to take the kingdom of astale for their own and end the reign of the foolish ginger-haired girl who sits on the throne. of course, tristan is unaware of his uncle's true intentions, blinded by the debt he feels he owes, and will do anything to please the man. in latest news, aragon seems to be wanting his son to play the role of an assassin. feign heartfelt sincerity toward the princess, and when she has let her defenses down, kill her.
