TYBALT LYON
27 YEARS - MALE - 6 FEET 2 IN - WHATEVERSEXUAL - DISMISSED KNIGHT
ONCE UPON A TIME
"it is better to fight for something than live for nothing."
LIKES & DISLIKES
● mocking idiots and proving his strength
● strong beer and drowning his sorrows in ale
● fighting for a cause and upholding his pride
● winning challenges and having the last word in a spat
● feeling needed and protecting the ones he holds dear
● admitting he's wrong and losing an argument
● sappy couples and dimwits who try to order him around
● hypocrites and people who don't keep their word
● cowardice and anyone who won't stand up for themselves
● large crowds and people who don't know how to keep their mouth shut
PERSONALITY
● Tybalt is an incredibly gruff man. His tongue is sharp, and his words are often sarcastic and cutting. He tries to keep it together – truly, he does – but it's only a matter of time until an idiot pisses him off and he loses his temper. The smallest things grate on his nerves, and he doesn't hesitate to take his hotheadedness out on the culprit responsible.
● While his tone may be rather brash, he has a good heart under his crude, rough exterior. He cares deeply for people, although one would never guess it, and he wants nothing more than to protect them and keep them out of harm's way; a preserved remnant from his time as a knight in the king's army.
● He is as stubborn as an ox, and once his mind is made up, it isn't going to change. No matter how convincing the other party is, no amount of persuasion will be able to sway him. In fact, he often disregards the opinions of others because it makes him feel like they're challenging his own intelligence.
● Tybalt likes challenges. While most people find such things bothersome and tiring, he enjoys the thrill of working toward a goal, no matter how impossible it may seem. He believes that nothing should be given to a person for free, and that everyone should have to earn their own share of happiness and satisfaction.
● While he is a rather quick-tempered, argumentative man, he does not like pointless brawls. He will only fight if it is for a righteous cause, and he looks down on unnecessary bloodshed. He may be loudmouthed and rude, someone who starts pointless arguments, but he would never draw a sword on an innocent person unless he had a logical reason to do so.
● This may make him seem like a selfish, horrible person, but he detests seeing other people happy. In a sense, he feels that it is unfair, and if he must be miserable, the rest of the world should be too. Married couples holding hands? Children laughing? Forget it. It depresses him to watch.
● There is reason behind his overall, loathing attitude, and this is his dismissal. After being injured beyond repair in a battle, he was deemed unfit to be a member of the league of knights. Ever since, Tybalt has harbored a deep bitterness in his heart. He spent his entire life training to be a knight, protecting those weaker than him, and now that it's been taken away from him, he doesn't know what to do with himself.
THE STORY SO FAR
Ever since he was a child, he had dreamed of being a great knight, a protector of the people. His father had been one of the king's most trusted soldiers, and Tybalt wanted desperately to follow in the older man's footsteps. He went through rigorous training from a young age, hoping to fulfill this dream, that someday he too could serve the king. His father was his main instructor, teaching his son how to wield a sword, how to fight. The two of them bonded deeply over this.
Sadly, one day, Tybalt's father did not return from battle, and the young boy son learned that he had been killed. The news tore him apart, as it did his mother. He had to work harder after that to take care of what was left of his broken family. His mother would weep uncontrollably, saying that it was too dangerous, that she could not bear to lose him as well, and Tybalt, finding her pleas heartbreaking, temporarily gave up on his dream to take care of her.
The depressed woman passed away when her son was fifteen, her frail body too weak to fight off the sickness inside her. Distraught, and having nowhere else to go, Tybalt sought solace at the castle, begging the guards to let him see the king. At first, they would not allow him pass, but when Tybalt told them of his father's name, an alias familiar throughout the kingdom, they quickly granted him entry.
Tybalt met with the king, fell to his knees, and begged the noble man for permission to join the knight's alliance, all but groveling at his feet. To his utmost surprise, the king gave his approval. It seemed his father had been more of a legend than he had ever known, and the other knights eagerly welcomed Tybalt to their ranks. They were pleasantly surprised with the young man's level of skill, amazed how similar his style was to his father's.
He fought in the army from the age of eighteen until his twenty-fifth year. It was during this time that he was brutally injured, his right arm wounded beyond repair. With much regret, the king had no choice but to disband the unfortunate man from the alliance of knights. Tybalt was honored for his bravery in battle, but without his right arm, it would be impossible for him to wield a sword. Tybalt took his fall from grace hard, and for months after his disbandment, he spent his nights in the tavern, chugging ale until he either passed out cold or got kicked out onto the streets.
As time passed, he became bitter. He doesn't blame the king for his failure – only his own recklessness – but he can't help but feel a sense of betrayal. Despite his inconvenient injury, Tybalt has not given up practicing his swordsmanship, attempting to train himself to hold his sword with his left hand. He has become rather nifty at this, but nowhere near skilled enough to be allowed back into the royal army. Just before the king died, however, the forlorn ex-knight was given one, last blessing. He was assigned to be the bodyguard of the king's only daughter. At first, Tybalt neglected this duty, feeling it was out of pity, but after the king was assassinated, he scarcely left the princess' side.
When he isn't grudgingly babysitting his royal highness, the ex-knight can often be found re-visiting the tavern, drowning what's left of his sorrows in ale and whiskey, wishing he had a reason to live. Of course, an old tavern probably isn't the most likely place to find such a reason, is it?
OTHER INFO
● Here's a secret. While Tybalt acts like he detests company, he actually enjoys it. He'll never let on, but he hates being alone with his thoughts, and he'd give anything to share a toast with another.
● The princess is currently his only reason to keep going. There have been times when he has contemplated ending his life, but he has stopped himself each time, remembering the duty he has been given. He feels that if he lets anything happen to her, it will only be another failure in his life, and for once, he wants to protect someone. He lost his father, and then his mother, and all he could do was stand by helplessly. He vows to never let that happen again.
